R.O.O.T.S.
provides safe and fun opportunities for First Nations people to encounter Jesus while rediscovering traditional and using contemporary technology and skills, such as kayaking, multi-day wilderness trips, day trips that include education in traditional foods, survival skills, archery and participation in community events.
R.O.O.T.S design and leadership originated and remains with Native people. Tal James, a Penelakut Native leads this ministry. Partnership with Native people is a core value. Tal has worked together with Tim Christensen for 6 years. R.O.O.T.S. is based on Penelakut Island, a Native reserve, and uses a holistic model to equip the participants with life skills that place Jesus at the core of their lives.
R.O.O.T.S. operates within the existing programs of the Penelakut community and doesn't attempt to run programs to compete with other offerings from the community. The relationships developed with kids and adults are the key to the whole ministry and provide the opportunity for us to share the hope and healing that Jesus brings to our lives and world in a culturally relevant way.
R.O.O.T.S is recognized by the Penelakut Island School and Penelakut leadership as a legitimate source of practical, academic and spiritual education and is sought after by a growing number of reserves.
